House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) blasted the House Republican leadership during a Thursday press conference for adjourning Congress in mid-July for summer recess without passing critical appropriations bills and called on them to return to Washington as soon as possible to commence pending legislative business.
WASHINGTON (Talk Media News) – House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) lashed out at the House Republican leadership during a Thursday press conference for adjourning the lower chamber in mid-July for a seven-week recess and implored Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) to reconvene Congress.
“What better thing do you have to do that you go home for a month and half after ignoring the President’s request for funding for Zika…”What better thing do you have to do than giving us a vote on “no-fly no-buy” and common-sense background check legislation (for gun purchases),” Pelosi sarcastically asked.
Pelosi spoke alongside several prominent House Democrats including fellow Californian Rep. Xavier Becerra, Rep. Steve Israel (N.Y) and Rep. Donna Edwards (D-Md.). All blasted the House Republican leadership for failing to accommodate various funding requests.
The Minority Leader said Republicans are against allocating sufficient funds to combat the Zika virus because Democratic proposals include provisions that would authorize funding for contraception in lieu of the fact that the disease can be transmitted sexually.
“By the way, they’ve already thrown up obstacles to the Zika funding,” Pelosi said. “If you’re infected by Zika: it can be sexually transmitted… And yet they’re saying: Well, if we have any funding for Zika it cannot include contraception.”
Ryan’s office has not yet responded to Pelosi’s comments but issued a tweet Wednesday blaming Democrats for Congress’ failure to allocate sufficient funds to combat Zika:

Pelosi also implored Republicans to return to Washington to appropriate requisite funds to help address Zika as well as other pressing issues.
“Come back, do the job,” Pelosi said.
Pelosi also said she had received intelligence briefings on the recent cyber attacks against the Democratic National Committee and Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee.
“I know for sure, it is the Russians,” Pelosi said. “I said that at the convention two weeks ago.”
Pelosi said the cyber attacks constituted an “electronic Watergate.”
