WASHINGTON – The Trump Campaign on Friday announced its support for the Senate candidacy of Rep. Kevin Cramer (R-N.D.).
“Kevin is the type of leader the President needs to expand the GOP margin in the U.S. Senate and to support his agenda for more jobs and economic growth. We are happy to support Kevin Cramer for Senate and encourage all North Dakotans to support his candidacy in the GOP primary on June 12 and again in the General Election this November,” Michael Glassner, Chief Operating Officer for Donald J. Trump for President, Inc. said in a statement.
Cramer, 57, has represented North Dakota’s at-large congressional district since 2013. He serves on the House Energy and Commerce Committee as well as several of its subcommittees.
Should Cramer prevail in the GOP primary he will face incumbent Sen. Heidi Heitkamp (D-N.D.) in the general election.
Heitkamp, a moderate who is well respected on both sides of the aisle, has served in the upper chamber since 2013.
The race could determine which party controls the Senate next year.
Republicans occupy 51 seats. Democrats control 49 seats.
President Donald Trump carried North Dakota by 36 points in the 2016 election.
