MARTINSBURG, W.V. – GOP Rep. Kevin Cramer defeated Democratic Rep. Heidi Heitkamp in the North Dakota Senate race, according to CNN projections.

Cramer, 57, is a staunch conservative and a strong supporter of President Donald Trump. He has represented North Dakota’s at-large congressional district since 2013.

Heitkamp, 62, is a centrist Democrat. She has served in the Senate since 2013.

Heitkamp voted to confirm Judge Neil Gorsuch to the Supreme Court but voted against the confirmation of Judge Brett Kavanaugh to the high court.

For months polls showed Heitkamp trailing Cramer by double-digits.

North Dakota is reliably Republican. Trump carried the state by about 36 points in the 2016 election.

North Dakota has not elected a Democrat to the Senate since 2004.
