MARTINSBURG, WV – GOP Rep. Marsha Blackburn defeated Democrat Phil Bredesen in the Tennessee Senate race, according to CNN projections.

Blackburn, 66, has served in Congress since 2003. She is a staunch conservative and a strong supporter of President Donald Trump.

Bredesen, 74, is a centrist Democrat. He previously served as Nashville mayor and Tennessee governor.

For months polls showed a tight race with both candidates overtaking each other in the lead.

However, many polls showed Blackburn with a strong lead among white evangelicals, who are a key voting bloc in the state.

Tennessee is one of the most reliably red states in the U.S. Trump won the Volunteer State by 26 points in 2016.

Former Vice President Al Gore was the last Democrat to represent Tennessee in the Senate.

Blackburn will replace retiring GOP Sen. Bob Corker. She is the first woman elected to represent Tennessee in the Senate.
