WASHINGTON – Florida Sens. Marco Rubio (R) and Rick Scott (R) took to Twitter on Tuesday to keep constituents updated on Hurricane Dorian as the storm travels from the Bahamas to the Florida coast.

The storm has ravaged the Bahamas since Monday. Nearly 30 inches of rain have fallen on the island. At least five people have been killed, according to media reports. Thousands of homes have reportedly been destroyed. The storm is approaching the U.S. coastline at approximately 2 mph, according to the National Hurricane Center.

The Center on Tuesday afternoon downgraded the storm from a Category 5-the most powerful-to a Category 2. The Center estimates that over the next three days the storm will hit the coasts of Florida, Georgia and the Carolinas.

Fla. Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) was scheduled to provide further updates at a news conference at 1:45 p.m. EDT.

The storm comes less than one week before Congress is scheduled to return to Washington, D.C. from its month-long August recess.

The House Judiciary Committee was scheduled to mark up gun control legislation on Wednesday but the committee postponed the mark-up to next week due to the threat of the hurricane. The committee announced the postponement on Friday evening.

The House and Senate are now both scheduled to reconvene on Monday.
