(Talk Media News) — “The Nightly Show” host Larry Wilmore will host next year’s White House Correspondent’s dinner, the organization announced Wednesday.
“Larry’s edgy, even provocative, brand of humor means he’s certainly up to the task of skewering politicians of all ideological stripes, and we don’t expect the nation’s news media to escape unscathed, either,” Carol Lee, White House correspondent for The Wall Street Journal and president of the White House Correspondents’ Association said in a statement. “We are thrilled that Larry has accepted our invitation to be the featured comedian at our annual dinner, which will be the last during the Obama White House.”
Wilmore said on Twitter that he was “beyond excited” to host the dinner, which has been hosted in the past by comedians such as Stephen Colbert and Conan O’ Brian.
Since the launch of “The Nightly Show” after the departure of Stephen Colbert from Comedy Central, Wilmore has stayed the course in the footsteps of both Colbert and former “Daily Show” host Jon Stewart in political commentary.
Wilmore has taken political jabs at members of both parties, but has taken aim at Donald Trump in recent weeks over his proposal to ban Muslims from entering the United States.
The White House Correspondents’ dinner will be held on Saturday, April 30, 2016.
