White House vigorously defends tariffs on Mexico as congressional Republicans balk

THE WHITE HOUSE – White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders on Friday is vigorously defending President Donald Trump’s upcoming tariffs on Mexico, despite objections from the Chairman of the Senate Finance Committee, Chuck Grassley.

The Republican senator from Iowa said in a statement that, “This is a misuse of presidential tariff authority and counter to congressional intent.”

When asked if the president had blindsided Republicans, Sanders replied:

But Republican Sen. Joni Ernst from Iowa issued a statement today saying that: “If the president goes through with this, I’m afraid progress to get this trade agreement across the finish line will be stifled.”

Faced with widespread opposition to the tariffs, Trump is defending his moves on Twitter. Trump tweets:
