WASHINGTON—President Donald Trump scrapped a ceremony honoring Super Bowl 2018 champions the Philadelphia Eagles Monday evening, saying that the White House will instead hold an event Tuesday afternoon described on the official White House schedule as “the Celebration of America.”

In a statement Monday night, Trump claimed that the Eagles “disagree with their President because he insists that they proudly stand for the National Anthem, hand on heart, in honor of the great men and women of our military and the people of our country.”

“The Eagles wanted to send a smaller delegation, but the 1,000 fans planning to attend the event deserve better,” Trump said. “These fans are still invited to the White House to be part of a different type of ceremony—one that will honor our great country, pay tribute to the heroes who fight to protect it, and loudly and proudly play the National Anthem.”

Nobody on the Eagles’ roster refused to stand for the National Anthem in protest last year.

Later that evening, Trump attempted to shift the message by suggesting that Eagles players have opted to stay in their locker room rather than coming on the field for the anthem.

No Eagles players stayed in the locker room last season and there is no indication that they intended to this season.

As for “the Celebration of America,” Trump said in Tuesday morning tweet that it will include music from the U.S. Marine Band and the U.S. Army Chorus.

Trump will appear at the ceremony on the White House South Lawn at 3pm EST.

Following the cancelation, the Eagles released a short statement that avoided referencing the decision directly.

Trump has repeatedly chastised players who refuse to stand for the anthem as well as teams and owners who do not punish them for doing so.

The Washington Post reported Monday that Trump went so far as to float tax penalties for the league.

Last month, the National Football League’s (NFL) owners agreed to new rules that would levy fines against teams and players who decline to either stand for the anthem or wait in the locker room.

While Trump’s criticism of the NFL has been viewed as red meat for his base, Tuesday’s decision also appears to be rooted in concerns that not enough players would attend the previously scheduled ceremony.

According to NFL Network reporter Mike Garofolo, less than 10 players were initially planning on showing up.

    1. Another reason why Donnie and Roseanne are simpatico — neither one knows the words to the National Anthem, and so they fake it.
