WASHINGTON — The White House announced Friday that the U.S. will reinstate all sanctions against Iran that were previously lifted during the Obama administration on as part of 2015’s “Iran deal.”
The move comes just under six months after Trump announced that the U.S. would no longer abide by the accord, which put checks on Iran’s nuclear weapons program in exchange for the U.S. easing sanctions.
“This was a horrible, one-sided deal that should have never, ever been made,” Trump said in May during remarks from the White House’s Diplomatic Room. “It didn’t bring calm, it didn’t bring peace and it never will.”
On Friday, the White House claimed in a statement that the reimposed sanctions coupled with sanctions levied earlier in the Trump administration will represent “the toughest sanctions regime ever imposed on Iran.”
Shortly after the announcement was made, Trump took a victory lap by sharing a meme based off the HBO series “Game of Thrones:”
