WASHINGTON— President Donald Trump taunted Howard Schultz on Twitter Monday, one day after the former Starbucks CEO floated running in 2020 as an independent.

“Howard Schultz doesn’t have the ‘guts’ to run for President!” Trump tweeted. “I only hope that Starbucks is still paying me their rent in Trump Tower!”

Schultz has publicly flirted with a presidential run for years, but signaled Sunday that this could be his moment.

During a “60 Minutes” interview Sunday night, Schultz described himself as a “lifelong Democrat,” but tilted toward an independent bid by lamenting “extremes on both sides.”

CBS’ Scott Pelley predicted that the move would draw a tweet from the president.

“You know it’s ‘on’ after this interview. President Trump is gonna be tweeting by about 8:00 Eastern Time,” Pelley told Schutlz. “Gonna say terrible things about you.”

“I think, like most people … I’ve become bored with President Trump and his tweets,” Schultz replied.

Trump’s tweet came at 8:41 am EST.

Schultz faced a barrage of online criticism, with many fearing that he could embolden Trump by drawing votes away from Democrats.

When confronted with that Sunday, Schultz largely brushed it off.

“I wanna see the American people win. I wanna see America win,” Schultz said. “I don’t care if you’re a Democrat, Independent, Libertarian, Republican. Bring me your ideas. And I will be an independent person, who will embrace those ideas. Because I am not, in any way, in bed with a party.”
