WASHINGTON—President Donald Trump offered an unusual critique of Beto O’Rourke Thursday, claiming that the newly minted Democratic candidate “has a lot of hand movement.”

“I’ve never seen so much hand movement. I’ve never seen so much hand movement. I said, ‘Is he crazy or is that just the way he acts?’ ” Trump told reporters in the Oval Office. “I watched him a little while this morning doing, I assume, it was some kind of a news conference and I’ve actually never seen anything quite like it.”

“Study it; I’m sure you’ll agree,” he added.

O’Rourke, a former Congressman who narrowly lost in his Senate bid against Ted Cruz (R-Texas) last November, announced his candidacy for president Wednesday night.

During a coffee shop appearance in Iowa Thursday morning, O’Rourke certainly appeared animated.

However, Trump also has been known to talk with his hands, a habit that comedians have noted.

This is not the first time hands, the well-known appendage enjoyed by primates of all stripes, have been at the center of campaign talk.

Trump was visibly irked by Sen. Marco Rubio’s (R-Fla.) suggestion that he had small hands during the 2016 campaign.

At one point, Trump defended the size of both his hands and another unnamed appendage

“He referred to my hands,” Trump said on the debate stage in March of 2016. “ ‘If they’re small, something else must be small.’ I guarantee you there’s no problem. I guarantee.”
