WASHINGTON — Meghan Markle, Britain’s Duchess of Sussex and the wife of Prince Harry, gave birth to a boy Monday morning, Buckingham Palace announced.

“We are pleased to announce that Their Royal Highnesses The Duke and Duchess of Sussex welcomed their firstborn child in the early morning on May 6th, 2019. Their Royal Highnesses’ son weighs 7lbs. 3oz,” the Palace said in a statement.

The Palace said that the baby was born at 5:26 a.m. local time and that Prince Harry was present.

“The Duchess and baby are both healthy and well, and the couple thank members of the public for their shared excitement and support during this very special time in their lives,” the Palace said.

Markle, 37, went into labor earlier on Monday morning, the Palace said.

Hours after the birth of his son, a beaming Prince Harry, 34 — who still seemed to be in a state of shock — told reporters that he is so proud of his wife.

“How any woman does what they do is beyond comprehension, but we’re both absolutely thrilled and so grateful to all the love and support from everybody out there.”

Harry said the baby’s name had not yet been selected, even though his son “is a little bit overdue, so we’ve had a little bit of time to think about it.”

The prince said that “in two days time” he and his wife expect to show their son to the media “so everyone can see the baby.”

“As every father and parent will ever say, you know, your baby is absolutely amazing, but this little thing is absolutely to-die-for, so I’m just over the moon,” he added.

The location of the birth has not disclosed, but Markle had made it clear she wanted to have the baby at home. The couple moved into Frogmore Cottage, on the grounds of Windsor Castle in Windsor, last month from a sprawling apartment in Kensington Palace in London, the same royal residence where Harry and his brother lived with their mother, Diana, princess of Wales, after she and Prince Charles divorced in 1996.

The Palace said “Doria Ragland, who is overjoyed by the arrival of her first grandchild, is with Their Royal Highnesses at Frogmore Cottage.”

Ragland is said to have arrived in Windsor from Los Angeles several days earlier. The divorced yoga instructor, who recently retired from her job as a social worker, will reportedly be staying with her daughter and son-in-law for some time to help with the baby. She was the only relative of Markle’s who attended the royal wedding on May 19, 2018.

The baby is believed to be Britain’s first royal baby ever born to an American. The child will be eligible for dual citizenship, just like his mother.

Markle, 37, is a former actress who co-starred on the USA network legal drama, “Suits,” before she quit her job to move to London in the fall of 2017.

There have been reports that the Sussexes will relocate this year to either Africa or Los Angeles, where Markle was reared, amid unsubstantiated but persistent talk of a rift between Harry and his brother. Prince William is second in line to the throne behind their father. The newborn is seventh in line to the throne, behind his father, who follows William’s three children, Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis.
